Every technique in Hearthwild's wind-down sequence is grounded in peer-reviewed research. Here's the science behind each step — and why the order matters.
The Sequence
The order is deliberate — each step prepares the nervous system for the next.

Alphabet of Thankfulness — woven into the story
Rather than a separate exercise, the Alphabet of Thankfulness is embedded in the story itself — the episode's lead character says their own A-to-Z of gratitude as they drift off to bed. Gratitude reduces cortisol and shifts attention away from self-focused worry. The A-to-Z format is a form of cognitive shuffle — occupying the language centres with low-stakes content, interrupting rumination. Hearing it from a beloved character the child has just spent 35 minutes with makes the technique feel natural rather than instructional.

Step 01
Peripheral Vision Expansion
Activating the parasympathetic nervous system
How it works
When we focus narrowly (on a screen, a book, or a worry), we activate the sympathetic nervous system — the alert, vigilant state. Shifting to a soft, wide, panoramic gaze — where you're not focusing on any single point — immediately suppresses activity in the visual cortex and signals safety to the nervous system. This is one of the fastest known transitions into a calm state.

Guided by a calm narrator, your child softens their gaze and expands their awareness to the edges of the room — noticing everything without focusing on anything. Done with eyes open for 1–2 minutes before any eyes-closed techniques.
Step 02
Tapping (EFT)
Down-regulating the amygdala
How it works
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) involves tapping gently on acupressure points while acknowledging thoughts or feelings. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show EFT significantly reduces cortisol levels and self-reported anxiety. The bilateral, rhythmic nature of tapping appears to reduce amygdala hyperactivity — the same mechanism believed to underlie EMDR therapy.

Framed as 'God's Peace Buttons' — a series of gentle taps on familiar points (eyebrow, cheekbone, collarbone, etc.) guided by a warm narrator. Simple enough for a 5-year-old, effective enough for an 11-year-old.
Step 03
Cyclic Muscle Relaxation
Teaching the body to choose rest
How it works
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), developed by Edmund Jacobson in the 1920s, works by deliberately tensing and then releasing each muscle group in sequence. The contrast between tension and release teaches the body the felt sense of relaxation — and activates the parasympathetic nervous system through physical, not just cognitive, means. Multiple studies show PMR improves sleep onset and quality in children.

Adapted for children with simple language and a cyclic structure — squeeze and release, moving from toes to shoulders. Follows tapping so that emotional regulation happens before physical release.
Step 04
Sleep Meditation
Body scan, visualisation, and affirmations
How it works
The sleep meditation combines three evidence-based components. Body scan meditation (a core MBSR technique) brings attention to physical sensations without judgement, reducing hyperarousal. Safe-place visualisation creates a mental environment associated with safety — which reduces cortisol and activates the default mode network's quieter, restorative mode. Gentle affirmations delivered in the second person help shift self-talk in a positive direction before sleep.

Delivered by a dedicated sleep narrator in a slower, quieter voice. By the time the child reaches this step, they are emotionally regulated, cognitively quieted, and physically relaxed — ready to receive it fully.
Step 05
Lullaby Interlude
Music tempo and sleep maintenance
How it works
Music with a tempo of 60–80 BPM has been shown to synchronise with resting heart rate and slow brainwave activity. Continuous, gentle music during sleep onset supports the transition from light sleep (N1, N2) to deeper slow-wave sleep (N3) — and reduces the likelihood of waking during that transition. Familiar, repeated music also provides a conditioned sleep cue over time.

A 49-minute interlude of classic Christian children's songs arranged at a slow, restful tempo. Plays through automatically at the end of the sleep meditation — designed to still be playing as sleep deepens.
